Tears Behind the Smiles: Voices from Jagti Camp, Jammu
More than three decades after the 1990 Kashmir exodus, thousands of Kashmiri migrants continue to live in exile — forgotten, unheard, and struggling to survive. The LIVE IMAGE team recently visited Jagti Camp in Jammu, a settlement that has become home to displaced Kashmiri Pandits since the early 1990s.
The visit, conducted and directed by Myself (Mrs. Rama Deepak, CEO LIVE IMAGE”, captured the real voices of those who witnessed the tragedy of migration and are still living through its consequences.
“We Lost Our Homes, Not Our Hope”
Residents of Jagti Camp shared their heartbreaking experiences — the pain of losing their ancestral homes, the trauma of displacement, and their longing to return to the Valley they once called home.
But amid their emotional stories, one thing stood strong: hope. Hope that someday, they will return to the land where their roots lie — Kashmir.
Decades of Neglect and Injustice
The migrants expressed deep frustration over the failure of both the State and Central Governments. According to them, the Relief Commissioner has failed to perform his duties responsibly, leaving families to struggle with poor living conditions and administrative neglect.
They revealed shocking details:
- Contaminated drinking water in the camp endangers health.
- Four families forced to live in a single flat, even after 30 years.
- Relief assistance remains unchanged, despite inflation and hardship.
- The Supreme Court has not delivered justice, leaving them in despair.
Their demands are clear — rehabilitation, fair assistance, and the right to reclaim their homes and land in Kashmir.
Life in Exile: A Generation Growing Up in Camps
For many young people in Jagti Camp, the camp itself is the only home they’ve ever known. The second generation of migrants has grown up hearing stories of a homeland they’ve never seen. Yet, their identity remains deeply tied to Kashmir, and their hearts still carry a yearning to return.
A Call for Accountability and Humanity
This ground report is not just a story; it’s a reminder of how political promises often fade while real people continue to suffer. The Kashmiri migrant community deserves more than sympathy — they deserve justice, dignity, and a future in their own homeland.
