The
passing away of PADMA SACHDEV , the famed and renowned , Dogri poet, author and
writer is a sad blow to the cultural life of J&K UT in general
and Dogri culture in particular. She breathed her last in a Mumbai Hospital.
She was 81 years old.
Hailing
from Pur Mandal, Jammu, she was born in 1940. She was the eldest of the 3
children.
Her father was a Sanskrit Professor who unfortun ately was killed in
1947 riots .She was 7 years old. Thus started the struggling life of Padma Ji.
She joined All India Radio jammu as an announcer in 1961. A rebellion by
nature, she became the modern face of Dogri writing. She married Sh. Ved
Pal Deep, an eminent poet and journalist but the marriage did not last long. In
the meantime she had gained name and fame through her writings .
While
working in All India Radio Jammu, she met Surinder Singh who was a singer and
Duty officer. After their marriage both of them moved to Delhi and ultimately
to Mumbai. Besides Dogri she had command over Hindi and Urdu languages. In
Mumbai she joined All India Radio .
She wrote lyrics for several films.In
Mumbai she became close to Mangeshkar sisters Lata Ji and Asha Ji who treated
her as a family member. She composed first Dogri Song Album with Lata
Mangeshkar . Lata Ji has expressed her deep condolence on the demise of PAdma
Ji.
Padma
Ji authored many books in Dogri language which includes her autobiography.. She
attained national fame and name . She was awarded SAHITYA ACADEMY AWARD in
1971. In 2001 , she was honored with PADMA SHRI award.
This
writer had the opportunity of having brief interaction athe seminar
to pay tributes to Sh. DINA NATH NADIM. She mostly remembered
journalists Late Sh. N L WATTAL and Sh. VED BHASIN. saying that both of them
encouraged her in her struggling days.
